Firm is Chosen to Complete Lafitte Corridor (8/15/10)
After receiving a city contract to revitalize the former railway known as the Lafitte corridor into a public park and greenway, only to have the contract terminated several months later, a Texas design firm has been selected once again to complete the long-awaited project.
The contract, awarded Aug. 9 to the Austin-based Design Workshop, was the first professional-services contract granted under the Landrieu administration's new selection process, which aims for greater transparency and public accountability.

Greenway Businesses
What does a healthy business environment have to do with a healthy environment? Everything, if you ask Mike Massey.
A local business owner and native New Orleanian, Mike is opening a retail location for Massey’s Professional Outfitters on North Carrollton Avenue in New Orleans in January 2008. Mike is keenly aware of the correlation between the environment and the business climate. His mantra is “Recreation means business.” His store’s Mid-City location on the Lafitte Greenway is ideal, and he anticipates reaping the economic benefits of his location.
“The Lafitte Greenway will solidify Mid-City/City Park’s position as the recreational epicenter of New Orleans,” says Mike. “It also creates a funnel for tourists wanting to explore deeper into the residential parts of the city, and a jumping off point for locals who want to head downtown. Our favorite part is that the city will enjoy the option of bicycle transport through numerous neighborhoods.”

How to not be caught up a creek without a paddle (June 03, 2007)
Working in an outdoors store, Bobby Johnson gets plenty of questions: What kind of pack should I have? Is this the right tent? What is this fabric? How does this work?
But the one that always surprises him goes like this: "You know, I saw some people with kayaks on top of their car, and I'm was wondering if there was any place nearby they can use those?"
It always makes Johnson pause. "What I want to say to them is, 'Do you ever look off the side of the road when you're driving around here?' " said Johnson, the chief financial officer at Massey's Professional Outfitters. "I mean, everywhere you look around here, you'll see water.
"There's nothing but places around here where you can use a kayak."
In fact, New Orleans might be the most paddle-ready metro area in the nation. This city, after all, was reared on the continent's greatest river delta smack in the middle of the largest expanse of wetlands left in North America. Residents of most large U.S. cities must drive hours to find a place to float their boats. Not here. We need only walk across the nearest levee, and we find water -- a river, a lake, a marsh, a swamp.
